Today's guest blogger is Cathy Barnard. Cathy is a former Simsbury High School PTC President, current nursery school teacher, and brand new empty-nester. She supports Lisa Heavner for re-election to the Board of Selectmen. Here's why:
I have known Lisa Heavner for over ten years and could give you countless reasons why she should be re-elected to the Simsbury Board of Selectmen. When Lisa hears about a problem, she works tirelessly to see it resolved.
Lisa is the Board of Selectmen representative to the Board of Education and in that capacity, it came to Lisa’s attention that there was a need to build a bridge between Simsbury Senior Citizens and the students and staff at the public schools. Neither group seemed to fully appreciate the other, so Lisa went to work.

Lisa talked to everyone: her fellow parents; folks at the Senior Center; school administrators; teachers and students resulting in a plan. It was simple really. Provide opportunities for the two groups to meet and good things would happen.
It worked. Lisa brought students over to the Senior Center to perform, and seniors over to the high school to eat pizza (served by students!) and watch a football game, go to a concert or enjoy the Art Show. The events were so successful, the program was formalized, and today the Senior VIP program, a collaboration between Simsbury Public Schools and the Simsbury Senior Center, serves hundreds of seniors in Simsbury each year. Lisa organizes student and parent volunteers so they can get to know the seniors and the seniors know them. Many of the administrators even got to know the seniors on a first name basis.

I can guarantee you that Lisa Heavner will put in the same effort for every member of the Simsbury Community and urge for you to vote for her on November 5th.
