We Could Write a Book!

(Don't worry — the names will be changed.)

It’s no wonder that we continue, 27 years later, to love, love, love our profession.

What other job can boast about working in fabulous homes (and fabulous doesn’t always mean big), meeting interesting new people, and in many cases, becoming part of the family?

Consider this: When you’re a caterer you get to be involved in life’s most precious celebrations — a new marriage, a new baby, a milestone anniversary or birthday.

We’re the lucky ones. We’re not on the guest list, but we get to be a part of the good, the fun — the "best part" of it all. We cater funeral and memorial services, but even then it is an honor to be called upon. Generally though, we are front and center for all the good times that make up life’s lasting memories.

And the stories? We have lots of them. We’ve done weddings where the groom’s best man is a woman. We’ve catered a wedding where there was a cow tied to the tent and a special concoction called “Boot Scoot Punch” was flowing freely. We’ve catered countless surprise parties where we’ve had to hide — in the dark — giggling with the guests. In the end, it’s what we do, even if it means crouching down under the kitchen window.

We’ve catered uptight events that have gone wild and seemingly sedate corporate affairs that turn our to be far from boring. That never quite knowing is what keeps it fresh and appealing. But don’t hold your breath for the tell all book — it’s like Vegas … what happens here, stays here.

We get asked all the time, “You must see it all,” to which we can honestly answer, yes, yes we do. Remembering the nervous couple awaiting the arrival of their guests, calling each other “hon” and “baby” makes the heart smile. Or the “Celebration of Life” party that came about because the wife had been cancer free for a year. The wedding where the hostess hand painted a “family tree” for all the guests to add their inked thumb print and names as a gift to the bride and groom.

The annual family Christmas party for the client whose grandchildren were mere tots when we first started catering. Now they are married and have tots of their own. The lavish corporate holiday parties of the 1980s where the decadence was not to be outdone. Bar and Bat Mitzvahs where the candle lighting ceremony brought tears to the guests (and our) eyes.

Yes we have a special and important role, or so we’d like to think, in our clients' lives, and we not only love it, but relish it.

We’ve had and continue to have quite a run, what with catering to celebrities, governors, political types and well-known businesses. But when it comes right down to it, it’s the “Everyday Joe” client who puts their indelible seal of uniqueness onto our business. It’s because of them that we have become the seasoned professionals that we are.

So keep the weddings, anniversaries, graduations and baby showers coming. We don’t get an invitation, per se, but we’ll be there, ready to celebrate with you and make memories that not only you will take away, but we will, too.
