West Simsbury Man Identified as Armed Carjacker in New York
Michael G. Murphy has been identified by New York State Police as the carjacker who was shot after threatening officers with a large knife.

A West Simsbury man has been identified by New York State Police as the individual involved in yesterday’s shooting on I-84 near Exit 11.
On Thursday at 3:30 p.m., Murphy car-jacked a vehicle at knifepoint. City of Beacon police responded.

He then abandoned the stolen vehicle on North Elm Street and was chased by police through a wooded area near I-84.
Murphy then ran across the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-84 near Exit 11. Just off the westbound shoulder, he threatened pursuing officers with a large knife and was subsequently shot and killed by police.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-84 were shut down for a period of time to process the scene of the shooting, causing delays for motorists.
At the direction of Dutchess County District Attorney William Grady, the New York State Police and Beacon Police Department are jointly investigating the shooting death by a Beacon police officer.
