World War I Essay Contest
Students in grade 5-8 in a Farmington Valley school are eligible.

Each year the Abigail Phelps Chapter of the DAR encourages Farmington Valley’s students in the 5th-8th grade to write an essay on a significant historical person, place, date, and event. “The essay contest is one of our favorite events” says Sherry Griffith the Abigail Phelps Chapter American History Chairman. “Last year we all wanted to visit national parks after hearing the students’ essays.”
The title of this year’s essay is “World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars”. November 11, 2018 will mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of the Great War. The end of World War I was the beginning of a new age. This year’s essay contest asks the students to imagine you are living in 1918. State where you are living and how the end of the war will impact your daily life. Discuss the pros and cons of the changes this War introduced to society and how you imagine those changes will impact the United States in the years to come.
Students in 5th-8th grades attending a school in the Farmington Valley are eligible. That includes public, private, parochial or home schooled students. The length of the essay is 300-1,000 words depending on grade. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for each grade will receive a cash award. For more information students can ask their teachers or principals about the DAR Essay Contest, or contact Sherry Griffith by email: Muthar1@sbcglobal.net. The area libraries also have information on their bulletin boards. The deadline for submissions is December 15, 2017.
