1 Killed In 3 Vehicle Crash On I-84 In Southbury; Man Charged With DUI: State PD

A tow truck driver was injured while changing a flat tire, according to State Police.

SOUTHBURY, CT — A Collinsville man, Kyle St. Denis, 44, of Stonemeadow Lane is accused of driving while under the influence at the time of a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 84 Friday evening, State Police said. One person, who has not yet been identified, was killed in the crash.

State Police said two vehicles were stopped on I-84 westbound in the right shoulder prior to Exit 15 in Southbury. One vehicle was stopped due to a flat rear right tire, and a tow truck was stopped behind that vehicle, State Police said.

St. Denis' vehicle was traveling on I-84 westbound when it "drifted over the white fog line in the right shoulder and struck the rear of the tow truck," State Police said. St. Denis' vehicle continued west and struck the left side of the other vehicle, State Police said.

"The impact pushed Vehicle #1 into the tow truck operator (pedestrian) as he was attempting to change the tire on Vehicle #1. Vehicle #3 came to an uncontrolled final rest facing east in the right shoulder," State Police said in an accident summary.

The tow truck operator (pedestrian), an Oxford resident, was transported by Southbury EMS to Waterbury Hospital for possible minor injuries. St. Denis was transported by Southbury EMS to Waterbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

St. Denis was then taken into custody at Waterbury Hospital and transported to Troop A barracks for processing, State Police said. He was charged with driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and or drugs and failure to drive in the established lane. St. Denis was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

The passenger in St. Denis' vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, State Police. The passenger has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, State Police said.
