Mixed-Use Development Proposed For Southbury Site

The nearly 9-acre project would include apartments, commercial space and new housing.

SOUTHBURY, CT — A mixed-use development featuring commercial space, apartments and new housing has been proposed for a nearly 9-acre property at 33 Burma Road in Southbury.

The project would include a 11,000-square-foot mixed-use building along Route 67 with commercial space on the first floor and residential apartments above. Additional residential buildings, including two duplexes and a single-family home with a detached accessory dwelling unit, would be located farther back along Burma Road.

According to application materials, the development is designed to create a village-like gateway to the Southford Village District while preserving the privacy and character of the existing residential neighborhood along Burma Road.

The applicant described the project as a cohesive residential development intended to fit within the area's rural setting.

The Southbury Planning Commission voted to provide the Zoning Commission with a positive referral on the Planned Development District application during a special meeting June 1.

Attorney Gail McTaggart told commissioners the developer has set aside a portion of the property that could potentially be acquired by the town for a future cul-de-sac on Burma Road.

The next step in the process is a public hearing before the Zoning Commission.
