Southbury Awarded State Grant To Replace Bridge

SOUTHBURY, CT — Southbury has been awarded a $535,000 state grant to help replace a bridge on New Road over Spruce Brook, Gov. Ned Lamont and Connecticut Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto announced Wednesday.

The funding is part of $16.8 million in grants awarded to 11 Connecticut municipalities through the latest round of the State Local Bridge Program.

According to the governor's office, the program provides municipalities with grants covering 50 percent of eligible project costs for reconstructing locally owned bridges.

Cities and towns are responsible for managing the design and construction of their projects, while the Connecticut Department of Transportation oversees project milestones and provides guidance.

"Whether it's kids going to school, people heading to work, or traveling to visit friends and family, every community depends on bridges that are safe and built to last," Lamont said in a statement. "This grant program provides significant relief to our towns and cities, helping them tackle costly infrastructure projects they couldn't take on alone."

Eucalitto said the grants help communities move infrastructure projects from planning to construction while making travel safer and more reliable.

The State Local Bridge Program was established by the General Assembly in 1984. Since 2016, the state has awarded approximately $180 million in grants through the program to help municipalities repair and replace locally owned bridges and culverts.
