2 Firefighters Hospitalized After Southbury House Fire

SOUTHBURY, CT — Two firefighters were taken to the hospital after battling a large house fire in Southbury Wednesday evening, according to the Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to a home on Roxbury Road, near Route 172, shortly before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Roxbury Volunteer Fire Department said its crews were requested to assist Southbury firefighters at about 5:24 p.m. and encountered "extremely heavy fire" upon arrival.

Roxbury firefighters joined Southbury crews on initial attack lines before additional firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack that knocked down much of the fire, officials said.

The fire caused extensive damage to the house, according to the department.

Two firefighters were transported for what officials described as minor environmental and heat-related issues. No other injuries were reported in the department's update.

The size of the fire prompted a significant mutual-aid response. Firefighters from Woodbury, Sandy Hook, Oxford and Middlebury assisted Southbury and Roxbury crews.

The cause of the fire was not immediately provided.
