Southbury Hopes To Look A Little More Like A Holiday Postcard This Year

SOUTHBURY, CT — Southbury is hoping to look a little more like a holiday postcard this year.

Plans are moving ahead to deck out a roughly two-mile stretch of Main Street South with illuminated wreaths and garlands, while town officials explore ways to get local businesses and property owners in on the festivities.

The decorations will be installed on existing lamp posts along Main Street South, where electrical upgrades are also underway to power the new displays. Southbury awarded contracts for both projects in July, according to town procurement records.

Bid specifications called for illuminated wreaths and garlands with warm-white LED lights — no higher than 3000K, with 2700K preferred — and approximately 200 lights on each wreath. The town sought as many as 75 wreaths and 150 garlands for the project.

The decorations are being designed for Southbury's existing decorative light poles and are expected to be reused for several years. The town required the wreaths and garlands to arrive in reusable containers suitable for off-season storage.

Preparations are already underway. The town has received mounting hardware for the wreaths, while bows were expected to arrive in late August. Wreaths and garlands are scheduled for delivery during the first week of November, according to Aug. 17 Streetscape Review Sub-Committee meeting minutes.

The first phase of electrical work is expected to cover about 150 lamp posts, beginning near the western end of Southbury Green and extending toward the Wells Fargo Bank area.
