5 Things To Know In Southbury: Poverty Road Sidewalk Opens, Bucks Hill Bridge Meeting, Fall Fest And More

Southbury opens the Poverty Road sidewalk with Rep. Jahana Hayes, hosts a meeting on replacing two bridges, and wraps up Fall Fest.

SOUTHBURY, CT — Southbury cuts the ribbon on a new sidewalk linking Main Street South with the library, presents plans to replace two bridges over Walnut Hill Brook, and wraps up its weeklong Fall Festival with a costume parade and outdoor movie.

1. Ribbon Cutting For New Poverty Road Sidewalk
When: Thursday, Oct. 15, 11 a.m.
Where: Southbury Public Library, 100 Poverty Road
What to know: The town will celebrate the new sidewalk on the north side of Poverty Road connecting Main Street South with the library, along with improved crosswalks at three Main Street South intersections, according to the town. The project was supported by $444,946 in federal Community Project Funding secured by U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, plus town money, and addresses concerns in a 2020 pedestrian safety study. Hayes and First Selectman Tim O'Neil are scheduled to attend; refreshments follow in the library.

2. Meeting On Replacing Bucks Hill, Munn Road Bridges
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2 p.m. (also livestreamed)
Where: Room 205A, Town Hall, 501 Main St. South
What to know: The town will present plans to replace the bridges carrying Bucks Hill Road and Munn Road over Walnut Hill Brook, according to the notice. The project is in design, bids will be sought for complete replacement, and the state's Local Bridge Program will reimburse half of eligible costs. The presentation will be livestreamed on the town's YouTube channel, and the town is seeking public feedback.

3. Fall Fest: Costume Parade And Outdoor Movie
When: Thursday, Oct. 15; parade at 5 p.m., movie at sunset (about 6:30 p.m.)
Where: Green outside the Parks and Recreation building, 561 Main St. South
What to know: Southbury Parks and Recreation's weeklong Fall Festival ends Thursday with a children's costume parade where local businesses hand out treats, a Zumba dance party, free popcorn and an outdoor movie co-sponsored by the library, according to the town. Earlier in the week: pumpkin carving Tuesday, 4 to 6 p.m., and a Southbury Land Trust program on little brown bats Wednesday at 4 p.m. (both require registration). Nonperishable donations go to the Southbury Food Bank.

4. Red Cross Blood Drive
When: Wednesday, Oct. 14, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Multi-Purpose Room, Parks and Recreation building, 561 Main St. South
What to know: The Southbury Senior Center is co-sponsoring an American Red Cross blood drive, according to the town. Schedule an appointment at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS; signup is encouraged but not required.

5. Absentee Ballots Available For Nov. 3
When: Available now
Where: Town Clerk's Office, Town Hall, 501 Main St. South
What to know: Absentee ballots are available at the Town Clerk's office, and application forms are in the office and on the town website, according to the town. The office is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed Fridays; call 203-262-0657.
