Approval for Crematory Sought in Southbury

The cremation rate in Connecticut is nearing 50 percent.

Currently, crematories are prohibited in Southbury, but the operator of the Munson-Lovetere Funeral Homes in Southbury and Woodbury is hoping to change that, reports Chris Gardner, of the Republican-American.

The funeral home wants to construct a crematory likely on a 2-acre site on Bullet Hill Road near the intersection with Depot Hill Road and the Exit 15 westbound on-ramp to Interstate 84.

A public hearing will be held Wednesday concerning the proposal. The commission would have to grant a zone change to allow the proposal to proceed.

Lisa Lovetere-Stone tells the Rep-Am she has the support of the community, and the cremation rate in Connecticut has almost reached 50 percent. It was just 12 percent in the 1970s.

The zoning meeting begins 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall and will be held in Room 205 A & B.
