Southbury's YMCA Camp Oakasha Fall Programs

Wondering what the Y has to offer your family in the Southbury area this fall? Check out our programs for ages 2-18 starting in September!

We've had an incredible summer at YMCA Camp Oakasha, and it will be sad to say goodbye to all of our campers on Friday!  But, we have lots of great fall programming in the area to look forward to, including Youth Sports, the Leaders Club, and Youth and Government.

Youth Sports will be held Saturday mornings, September 15-October 27 at the Southbury Training School Adventure Center at YMCA Camp Oakasha.  All of the the Youth Sports programs are $45 for Waterbury Y Members and $55 Non-Members.  Here are the class descriptions:

* Parent & Me Sports Spectacular- the perfect introduction to a healthy lifestyle for your 2 or 3 year old!  In this program, you and your child will learn the basics of many sports including soccer, kickball, t-ball, and pillow stick hockey.  Participants will play a different sport each week while developing skills and teamwork. Saturdays from 9-9:45.

The Leaders Club will be held at Rochambeau and Memorial Middle Schools from October to May.  The Leaders Club, a national Y program, provides youth the opportunity to learn and grow while improving their community. Seventh and eighth graders will meet every other week for an hour at their schools with a representative from the Y and their school for teambuilding and leadership development (meeting time TBA).  The Leaders Club will plan and execute three service projects throughout the year, make new friends, and develop new skills.

Youth and Government will meet at Pomperaug High School (meeting time TBA).  The Connecticut YMCA Youth and Government Program introduces teens in grades 9-12 to the organization and function of the Connecticut General Assembly through participation in a mock legislative session. Delegates participate as elected officials, representatives or senators, press corps members, or lobbyists.

Now in its second year, the Southbury Delegation will meet prior to the pre-state conference at PHS.  A practice session in January and the annual State Conference in March are held at the Connecticut State Capitol. The program is privileged to have access to the committee meeting rooms and the House and Senate chambers for an entire weekend.

In addition to drafting legislation, participants have an opportunity to chair a committee, run for elected office, argue a case in an appeals court, organize a political party, report for a newspaper, and work with over 300 other Connecticut high school students.
