CT Income Tax Town-By-Town: Who Pays The Most

CONNECTICUT — Fairfield County towns once again dominated the amount of state income tax paid by residents on earned income. Eight of the top 10 municipalities ranked by income tax are in Fairfield County.

In 2018, Greenwich topped the state with $692.98 million in paid income tax, more than double that of second-place Stamford. Greenwich residents paid nearly $100 million more in 2018 than the state’s five most populous cities combined.

About 1.62 million tax filers paid $7.19 billion in state income tax; the average return was $4,433. Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan all had average returns above $20,000. In 2017, the state took in $7.73 billion in income tax, according to data from the state Department of Revenue Services.

Connecticut's income tax is the primary source used to fill the state's coffers.

In 2011, the top 10 in order was Greenwich, Stamford, New Canaan, Westport, Fairfield, Darien, West Hartford, Norwalk, Milford and Ridgefield, respectively. The state took in $5.68 billion in income tax that year.
