District 32 Special State Senate Election Results

The district includes Southbury and Oxford. The outcome was watched closely because of the tie between Democrats and the GOP in the senate.

State Rep. Eric Berthel, a Republican, defeated his challenger, Greg Cava, a Democrat, by a margin of 9,931 to 8,121, according to the Connecticut Post.

The race was to fill the vacant 32nd District State Senate District. Berthel's victory ensures that the State Senate remains tied with equal number of Democrats and Republicans. Rob Kane resigned to take a job as a state auditor of accounts.

The district includes Oxford and Southbury. Democrats campaigned on an anti-Trump theme, the Post reports, and the GOP has held the seat for more than 100 years. Berthel has been vocal about Malloy's budget proposal, which if approved would mean a $4 million cut in state aid for Oxford and a $1.2 million reduction for Southbury.
