“Timeless Watercolors” by Doris Cole will be on display at the Gloria Cachion Art Gallery in the Southbury Public Library beginning February 1st and running through Sunday, February 27th.
Doris Cole was born in Toledo, Ohio and throughout her life has called Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Connecticut her home. Art has always been an important part of Doris' life, beginning in the second grade and following with years of art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art every Saturday through high school. These classes included a mix of oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors. When Doris and her family moved to South Carolina, she began extensive study in watercolor. Doris has studied formally and privately while steadily improving her technique. After several years of classes under well know watercolorists, Erica Hoyt and Robert Mills, she chose to concentrate her work in watercolor and pen and ink. Since living in Connecticut, and working full time, Doris had limited her art experience to commission requests from various organizations including the League of Women Voters of Southbury and the Southbury Newcomers Club of which she was an active member. She has provided various historical scenes of Southbury, later reproduced for note cards to provide operating funds for the club, as well as renderings for the Newcomers cookbook, and reproductions for Christmas and note cards commissioned by local residents.
Other commission work in watercolors has been completed over the last several years for various corporate companies and individuals within Connecticut and across the country. Since retiring, Doris has returned fully fledged into the art scene, and is exhibiting in various art shows, including juried shows in our area.
