Just yesterday, I attended a one day workshop, hosted by Scholastic Books, which focused on the importance of encouraging independent reading and read alouds. As a school librarian, I continually strive to match students with books that engage and interest them. Motivating and encouraging children to read daily and across genres is critical. Research has shown that independent reading is the single most effective factor in determining reading achievement. However, I also am committed to creating read aloud experiences for my students that are memorable and make an impact on them as readers and thinkers.
I must also encourage parents to continue to read aloud to their children throughout their childhood. All too often, parents stop reading aloud once their child becomes an independent reader. Yet, parents are the child's first and most influential teacher. Think about this: a child spends 7,800 hours at home while only 900 hours in school per year. So, keep reading aloud to your children regardless of their age.
Since summer vacation is in full swing, consider the extra hours you now have to enjoy reading with your children. Take advantage of the free ebooks offered through Amazon. You don't have to have a Kindle to download these books. You can use your computer or ipad, iphone, desktop, and more.
Here is a sampling of a few FREE ebooks for today. I can't guarantee they will be free tomorrow, so download them today.
Use as read alouds or independent reading for upper elementary students. I find elementary students gravitate towards nonfiction so I wanted to highlight a few:
