Future of Southbury Training School Still Grim: Report

At one point the school housed more than 2,300 residents.

The future of the Southbury Training School continues to look grim after state lawmakers approved closing the facility as part of a plan to reduce the state’s budget deficit.

No final closing date has yet to be announced, the Republican-American reports, but the signs still point toward the South Britain Road school, which houses people with intellectual disabilities, closing.

At one point there were 2,300 residents at the facility but now it’s down to just 270 people and the average age is 68, the Rep-Am reports.

Opponents of the Southbury Training School say it should close now as it’s an outdated model of support as compared to group homes.

It costs taxpayers about $350,000 to $400,000 to provide care for each resident at the Southbury Training School, the Rep-Am reports.
