‘Great Strides’ Benefit Walk to Return to Southbury
Local fundraiser part of nationwide effort to battle Cystic Fibrosis.
The Connecticut Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation announced last week the launch of ‘Great Strides’, a national walk that generates critical funds to support lifesaving cystic fibrosis research, education and care. The 2012 national goal of Great Strides, the largest CF fundraiser, is to raise nearly $40 million.
This year’s walk is the second to take place in Southbury and will commence at Ballantine Park on May 19. The event starts at 9 a.m. with sign in and activities for kids. The walk starts at 10 a.m. and will include a rest stop along the route. Those interested in walking should pre-register at http://www.cff.org/great_strides or contact Lauren Brenneman at (203) 725-8558.
Funds raised through Great Strides have helped spur dramatic progress in the lives of those who have cystic fibrosis. Fifty years ago, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are living into their 30’s, 40’s and beyond.

Last year’s inaugural Southbury Great Strides walk was a huge success, raising over $30,000 to support vital CF research, medical and education programs. 13 teams participated with 140 people walking the 3.6 mile route.
“With so much promising research on the horizon, it’s more important than ever that we raise every dollar we can to fight CF and improve the lives of people with this disease,” said Lauren Brenneman, Southbury Great Strides Chairwoman. “We are grateful for the contributions of each volunteer, donor and sponsor who supports Great Strides. Every walker is doing their part in this life-saving effort.”
