Obit: Edward Fleming, 79, Of Southbury

He worked at the Southbury Training School and as driver for the senior bus in town.

SOUTHBURY — Edward Joseph Fleming, 79, of Southbury, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019, at Waterbury Hospital with his son by his side. He was the husband of Elizabeth Matilda Hacklin Fleming.

Ed (Big Ed) was born and raised in Astoria, N.Y., November 13, 1939, the son of the late Lawrence and Gladys Fleming. He moved to Connecticut in 1970 and retired from the Southbury Training School after 20 years of employment. He loved working at STS with the clients, his co-workers, the nurses and doctors and the STS Fire Department crew.

Following his retirement from STS, he worked part-time for five years, driving the senior bus for the town of Southbury, which he greatly enjoyed.

Ed enjoyed spending his summers in Rhode Island, camping with his beloved wife and grandchildren. He was the biggest Yankee fan in Connecticut. Most of all, he loved being a grandfather, attending his grandchildren’s sports events, taking them fishing, and to baseball and basketball games. His fondest memories were of teaching all his grandchildren to ride bikes in Rhode Island.

He was a devoted husband to Elizabeth, who said he had too many wonderful qualities to list.

Besides his wife, he leaves his children, Thomas Fleming (Laura), John Fleming and Edward Fleming (Kimberly); his son-in-law, Randy Hayes; his siblings, Robert Fleming, Richard Fleming (Joanne) and Barbara Lynch (George); his brother-in-law, Thomas Young; his grandchildren, Emily, Richard, Alyssa, Brianna, Casey, Cody and Patrick; his great-granddaughter, Hope; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Jayne Hayes; and four siblings, Lawrence Fleming, Patricia Gormly, Carol Young and Lorraine Verni.

The family would like to thank the staff at Waterbury Hospital and Waterbury Pulmonary Associates, Dr. Morley and Dr. Ubano at Cardiology Associates of Greater Waterbury and Dr. Romanik in Southbury and loving caregiver Darleen Parent.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Walnut Hill Community Church, 156 Walnut Hill Rd., Bethel. A reception will follow at the church. Interment will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.
