Obituary: Anthony Joseph LaRocco “Tony”, 92, of Southbury

After moving to Heritage Village in 1986, he founded the Heritage Village American Legion Post 204.

Southbury - Anthony Joseph LaRocco “Tony”, 92, died Nov. 30, 2016. Married September 9, 1951 to Anne T. Shanley . He was born October 30, 1924 to Anthony and Frances Barrett LaRocco in New York City. In his youth he was nicknamed “Andy Gump” after the popular comic strip.

He is predeceased by his wife Anne and son Anthony J. LaRocco, and survived by his brother Nicholas LaRocco, daughters Jeanne LaRocco, Gail Ryder (Christopher), Barbara LaRocco, Mary LaRocco Dove, and Patricia LaRocco, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. LaRocco served as PFC in the 9th Air Force in Normandy and Rhineland through 1945.

During the war, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge and later served as a jeep driver for the Monuments Men. Tony joined the New York City Police Department in 1949 rising to the rank of Detective in the Homicide Division.

He trained as a Sky Marshall after retiring from the NYPD in 1970, serving three years as he traveled the world. In the following decade, he enjoyed careers as a restauranteur and real estate broker. Mr. LaRocco was always an active and enthusiastic member of his community.

He and Anne moved to Yorktown Heights NY in 1955 and raised their family in the Sparkle Lake Neighborhood. He was also active in Westchester County Shields, Knights of Columbus, and Elk’s Club. After moving to Heritage Village in 1986, he founded the Heritage Village American Legion Post 204. He was also active in the Men’s Club, HV Condo 10, Rules and Safety Committee, and other organizations in the Village. Tony was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southbury.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held on Monday December 5, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St South, Southbury, CT. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury.
