Obituary: James Joseph Calderwood of Southbury

SOUTHBURY - James Joseph Calderwood of Southbury, CT died peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018. He was 88 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife, Nora (Betty) Calderwood and his 3 children Brian (Marguerite) Calderwood of New Fairfield, CT, Patty McAvoy of Cranbury, NJ, and Kathy (Ed) Barrett of Washington, GA. He was a loving grandpa to his 5 grandchildren, Michael (Nicole) Calderwood, Megan Calderwood, Stephen McAvoy (Rosie), Jamie Barrett and Edward Barrett (Sonja) as well as 3 great grandchildren, Sean Barrett and Cristiano and Santino McAvoy. He is also survived by his brother, Jack (Betty) Calderwood of Long Island, NY and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Helen Morrelli and his brother, Tom Calderwood.

Jim was born on July 13, 1930 in the Bronx, NY to James and Ellen Calderwood. In 1951, he joined the Army and honorably served in Korea. He married the love of his life, Betty McGarry, on May 1, 1954 and settled in the Bronx where they lived for many happy years raising their 3 children. Jim proudly worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC until his retirement in 1995.

Jim and Betty moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT in 1998 where Jim enjoyed playing golf with his buddies and also with his grandkids. He also enjoyed bass fishing and loved to travel. He and Betty went on many wonderful trips with their friends from the Village. He loved to watch his favorite NY Giants and NY Yankees as well as the UConn Women's Basketball team. His most favorite times were being together with all his family.

Jim was a wonderful husband and dad, the best grandpa and a true friend and he will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan 6, 2019 from 3 - 6 PM in the Chapel Room of Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St South in Southbury, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Mon, Jan 7, 2019 at 11 AM at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will take place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Ave, Hawthorne, NY immediately following Mass Burial.
