Janet S. Narwold, 87, of Southbury, CT passed away peacefully in her home on December 7, 2016. Born May 1, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Winifred Shumaker. After spending her childhood growing up in Cleveland Heights, Janet attended Western College for Women and subsequently received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in English from Western Connecticut State University.
After moving to Brookfield, Connecticut in the early seventies, Janet held several teaching positions at a variety of public schools. For years Janet wrote a “Historical News” column and the “Random Thoughts” column for the Brookfield Journal and loved to uncover interesting historical facts about her new community.
She was honored by the Brookfield Women’s Club as the Woman of the Year for her journalism work and her efforts in obtaining the former Joyce Memorial Library as the home for the Brookfield Historical Society of which she was a board member.
Janet was a life-long lover of the outdoors and could always be found taking her beloved dogs for long walks through parks and on nature trails. She is survived by her five sons and their spouses, William and Nancy Narwold of West Hartford, Lee and Kathleen Narwold of Stratford, Andrew and Patricia Narwold of San Diego, CA, Christopher and Karen Narwold of Charlotte, NC, and Charles and Jennifer Narwold of Arcata, CA, as well as eleven beloved grandchildren.
