Southbury – Joseph Allan Platt, 83, died peacefully at Bethel Rehab on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017 after complications from Parkinsons Disease. He was the husband of Lois (Hallock) Platt. Joseph was born Oct. 27, 1934, the youngest child of Edward Arthur and Margaret (Reifel) Platt.
He lived his whole life in Southbury, attending schools in Southbury and Woodbury, where he studied FFA and worked on the family farm. He also worked at “Old Hundred” (Baskin Robbins) in Southbury, making ice cream for 32 years. He then worked at Southbury Training School for 10 years before retiring. Well-liked by everyone, he was an easy-going man with a sense of humor. He enjoyed going out to the Bazaar Restaurant and the Charcoal Chef, where they dined often.

His favorite vacation was a cruise on the riverboat, Delta Queen. Joe loved working in his yard, but also took charge of cooking all of the holiday meals, famous for his creamed onions. He also loved cats, having several over the years. Besides his wife of 58 years, he leaves behind three sons: Joseph of Vermont, Craig and his wife, Beth, of Wolcott and Arthur and his wife, Jeana, of Southbury; one daughter, Susan MacRitchie and her husband, Scott, of New Milford; two grandsons, Jason Platt and his wife, Sarah, of NY, and Jeremy Platt of Watertown, one granddaughter, Christine Leary and her daughter, Gabriella. Calling hours: Friday, Nov. 17th from 4 to 7 p.m. at Carpino Funeral Home, 750 Main Street South, Southbury, CT.
Joseph was very concerned for his grandson who has been battling cancer this past year. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, or for Lyme Disease research.
