Obituary: Joseph Frederick Whitney, 86, of Southbury

Aside from family, his many joys included traveling the world with Sally, spending long summers at his lake house.

Southbury – Joseph Frederick Whitney, 86, died Monday, November 27th at The Watermark at East Hill. He was the beloved husband of Sally (Scully) Whitney. Mr. Whitney was born March 7, 1931, in Rutherford, NJ, son of the late Leonard and Marion (Foley) Whitney. He spent most of his boyhood in the small village of Susquehanna Depot in Northeastern, PA where his father worked for Erie Lackawanna RR. He graduated from Niagara University and was a US Army veteran, honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant.

Mr. Whitney first worked for Ford Motor Company in Michigan, then spent over 35 years as a financial planning executive with IBM Corporation, with assignments across New York, Maryland and Europe. Aside from family, his many joys included traveling the world with Sally, spending long summers at his lake house in Pennsylvania, and winters in southern Florida. Residents of The Watermark at East Hill, he and his wife formerly resided in Bridgewater, Conn.

Besides his devoted wife of 62 years, he leaves his six loving children and spouses: Kevin Whitney and wife Marcy, Daniel Whitney and wife Helene, Ann Marie Walker and husband Terry, Sharon Darinzo and husband Glen, Michael Whitney and Timothy Whitney and wife Laureen; two sisters, Ann Lee and Mary Lynn Mulholland, and 16 cherished grandchildren.
