Obituary: ​Mary Alice Hawthorne, 81, of Southbury

She attended Mercer University and then worked at the Southbury Training School until she retired.

Mary Alice Hawthorne, 81, of Southbury, passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital after a long illness on May 26, 2018. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Henry “Pete” Hawthorne and son Madison Lee Moore.

Mary was born in Swainsboro, Georgia to the late William T. Scott and Louannie (Glaze) Scott. Mary referred to everyone as “Sugar.” She attended Mercer University and then worked at the Southbury Training School until she retired. Mary previously lived at the Lutheran Home of Southbury.

Mary leaves behind her brother William T. Scott Jr. of Georgia, son William “Sam” Hawthorne and his wife Lynn of Southbury, daughter Gloria Faye Booker of Putnam, and step-son James Gibson of Texas, along with her grandchildren Clifford Hawthorne (Chrissy), Scott Hawthorne, Raymond Williams, Jamie Vega (Eddie), James Pulliam (Tiffany), Khadijah Benoit, Alex and Jerrod, along with several great grandchildren.
