Pomperaug Girls Third, Boys Ninth in SWC Championship

Individual Pomperaug High athletes have a strong showing at the regional meet.

The Pomperaug girls track and field team took third behind Weston and Joel Barow at Monday’s South-West Conference Championship in Bethel. The boys team came in ninth in a meet won by Brookfield.

Individual events are listed below:

  • Girls 100 meter hurdles - Pomperaug’s Marina Alfonso took 1st place with a time of 16.90 while Alex Wilds took fourth with a time of 17.21.
  • Boys long jump - Pomperaug’s Conor Boba came in 1st place with a distance of 20-foot-2.75. 
  • Girls long jump - Pomperaug swept 1st  and 2nd place with Jessica Miller’s jump of 16-foot-2 and Alex Wilds’ 15-foot-.5. Makenzie Ahearn (14-foot-3) tied at 10th place, Marina Alfonso (13-foot-4.5) came in 19th.
  • Girls pole vault - Pomperaug’s Kelsey Bean came in 2nd place by clearing 10-foot-6 and Mackenzie Ahearn tied for sixth place with other vaulters who cleared 8 feet.
  • Boys discus throw - Pomperaug’s Willie Maxen came in 3rd with a throw of 153-2 and in the shot put, he was 4th with a throw of 46-06 
  • Boys 300 meter hurdles - Pomperaug’s Zachary South (43.11) came in 3rd while Nathan Smith (43.14) came in 4th.
  • Girls 300 meter hurdles - Pomperaug’s Alex Wilds (48.66) came in 3rd while Marina Alfonso (49.45) came in 4th.
  • Boys 800 meter run - Pomperaug’s Jonathan Bauer (2:02.51) came in 3rd.
  • Girls 1600 meter run - Abigail Ruane (5:22.60) came in 3rd and Erin Gibbons (5:40.96) came in 10th.
  • Girls 4x400 meter relay - Pomperaug’s Marina Alfonso, Brianna Curcio, Casey Hutchinson, Abigail Ruane came in 4th with a time of 4:20.
  • Girls triple jump - Pomperaug’s Kelsey Bean came in 4th with a distance of 31-foot-2.5.
  • Boys 4x100 meter relay - Pomperaug’s Conor Boba, Nathan Smith, Zachary South and Max Wallerstein came in 7th with a time of 45.95. Masuk’s Peter Symochko, AJ Edgeworth, Zak Champagne and Connor Timmons took 9th with a time of 47.22.
  • Girls 4x100 meter relay - Pomperaug’s Makenzie Ahearn, Gabriella Holness, Brianna Curcio and Alyssa Fusco came in 7th with a time of 53.25.
  • Boys 110 meter hurdles - Pomperaug’s Zachary South and Nathan Smith came in during the preliminaries at 5th and 10th with the respective times of 16.88 and 18.74 respectively. South, who qualified for the finals, came in sixth with a time of 16.80.
  • Girls 100 meter dash - several Pomperaug athletes participated in the preliminaries with the following times Jessica Miller (13.85), Casey Hutchinson (13.98), Gabriella Holness (14.22), Alyssa Fusco (14.27) and Kylie Williams (14.27). Pomperaug’s team of Taylor Goldstein, Rebecca Barolli and Cierra Rouse came in sixth-place with a time of 10:33.57 in the girls 4x800 meter relay.
  • Boys 1600 meter run - Pomperaug’s Michael Colandro ran a 4.52.71 to come in 12th.
  • Boys 400 meter dash - Pomperaug’s Max Wallerstein (53.43) came in 9th.
  • Girls 400 meter dash - Pomperaug’s Casey Hutchinson (1:02.03) came in 7th and Brianna Curcio (1:05.19) came in 15th while Kylie Williams (1:06.86) came in 19th. 
  • Girls 800 meter run, Pomperaug’s Tayler Goldstein (2:36.94) came in 15th while Erin Gibbons (2:37.71) came in 17th.
  • Boys 200 meter dash - Pomperaug’s Zachary South (25.02) came in 13th
  • Tirls 200 meter dash - Pomperaug’s Jessica Miller (27.64) came in fourth, Kelsey Bean (28.84) came in 15th, Alyssa Fusco (29.04) came in 18th, Gabriella Holness (29.88) came in 25th and Haley Moser (29.98) came in 27th.
  • Boys 3200 meter run - Pomperaug’s Troy Volanth (10:43.75) came in 24th. 
  • Girls 3200 meter run - Pomperaug’s Sara Greco (12:16.97) came in 5th, Gabriella Holguin (12:55.33) came in 21st.
  • Pomperaug’s Garrett Dielmans participated in the boys triple jump with a distance of 34-06.75.
  • Boys 4x400 meter relay - Pomperaug’s Jonathan Bauer, Michael Colandro, Max Wallerstein and Jonathan Novitski came in 9th with a time of 3:42.32.
