Pomperaug Health District Senior Flu Shot Clinics

The Pomperaug Health District will be holding flu clinics for seniors at various locations. The Health District clinics are staffed by experienced nurses. Appointments are not required, unless otherwise noted. New for this year: the Health District now accepts UnitedHealthcare, including the Medicare Advantage plan.

Heritage Village: Wednesday, October 16 from 10:00 AM to noon and Wednesday, October 30 from 11:00 AM to noon. Oxford Senior Center: Thursday, October 17 from 10:00 to noon. Southbury Senior Center: Wednesday, October 23 from 10:00 AM to noon. Woodbury Senior Center: Thursday, October 24 from 10:00 AM to noon; pre-registration required for this clinic, call 203-263-2828.

The Pomperaug Health District will have weekly walk-in clinics every Monday from October 7 to January 6, 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the Health District Office located at Playhouse Corner, 77 Main Street North, Suite 205 in Southbury. Please note there will be no clinic on the following days: October 14, November 11, and December 23.

The fees for the vaccines are as follows: quadrivalent vaccine $30.00; FluMist vaccine $30.00; Flublok vaccine $65.00; and high-dose vaccine $65.00. The following health insurances are accepted: Medicare Part B; Aetna; Cigna; and HUSKY/Medicaid. ConnectiCare and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield are also accepted, with the exception of their Access Health CT / CT Exchange plans (the gold, silver, bronze plans). Insurance cards must be presented at the clinic for each person receiving a vaccine. Persons with other health insurance or no health insurance must pay with cash, check, or credit card.

The Pomperaug Health District offers the most protective flu vaccines currently on the market. The quadrivalent shot protects against 4 strains of flu virus. Flublok vaccine is not made with eggs and also protects against 4 strains of flu virus. High-dose flu vaccine is available for persons 65 years and older. Studies have shown that the high-dose vaccine is safe and more effective for seniors than the regular vaccine, however, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) does not express a preference for any flu vaccine indicated for people 65 and older. FluMist is the nasal spray vaccine and is available for healthy persons 2-49 years old.
