Pomperaug High Students Finish 2nd in Northeast Science Bowl

The Regional competition is the qualifying round for the 2019 National Science Bowl (NSB) National Finals.

SOUTHBURY/MIDDLEBURY, CT — Students from Pomperaug High School (PHS) participated in the Northeast Regional Science Bowl competition held at the University of Connecticut, Storrs campus on March 3, 2019. The Regional competition is the qualifying round for the 2019 National Science Bowl (NSB) National Finals that is sponsored by the United States Department of Energy.

The PHS team finished 2nd in their division, outscoring a field of approximately 100 teams from 50 schools throughout New England. PHS students Ben Ecsedy, Michelle Lu, Dylan Janin, and Triloshan Thillaikumaran were members of the team that brought PHS their highest finish in a regional competition to date. Ed Nyerick, a science teacher at Pomperaug High School, is the PHS Science Bowl advisor.

“I am very proud of the efforts of all our students who competed. Our team was one win away from attending the National Finals in a competition that is one of the most prestigious and competitive science competitions in the country. Our students represented Region 15 and PHS superbly,” said Nyerick.

Members of the PHS Science Bowl team also included: Aditya Mamidi, Colin Scherer, Kieran Garrity, and Devon Zainc.

Student team leader Michelle Lu said, "Science Bowl is such an amazing program that brings together students interested in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). It's been an honor to lead a team with so many talented teammates that love math and science. Thank you to PHS and Region 15 for supporting this program."

The NSB brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete in a fast-paced question-and-answer format where they solve technical problems and answer questions on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth and space science, physics and math.
