Region 15 Pupils Compete For Book Bowl Title
The 4th Annual Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl competition was held at the Southbury Library on April 11,

From Pomperaug Regional School District 15: The 4th Annual Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl competition was held at the Southbury Library on Wednesday, April 11, 2018. Winning teams representing Region 15’s four elementary schools competed against each other to answer questions about the ten 2018 Intermediate Nutmeg Book Award nominees.
Danny Flanagan, Reagan Ward, Charlotte Murphy (team captain), Shannon White, and Tristan Nee represented Pomperaug Elementary School (PES) as members of the team “Ciccone’s Army” to win the 2018 Region 15 Nutmeg Book Bowl.
Competitions at the school level determined teams that would represent their school at the district-wide competition. In addition to the PES team, Ben Zipkin, Mishka Manjeshwar, Mary Moreira (team captain), Emma Bigman, and Tesu Beavers represented “The Book Bandits” from Middlebury Elementary School; Leah Joseph (team captain), Abby Arnauckas, Brennan Keane, Amelie Jose, and Eva Fellin represented “Book Brainiacs” from Long Meadow Elementary School; and Maddie DiPerna (team captain), Benjamin Grassi, William Holland, Sarah Henckel, and Mia Hanlon represented “The Book Blazers” from Gainfield Elementary School.

“Our Book Bowl encourages students to read quality literature on a variety of topics and themes. Our students love sharing their knowledge, and this is a fun way for the elementary schools to collaborate, to foster the love of reading, and to embrace our reading initiatives,” said Christina O’Neill, Long Meadow Elementary School Media Specialist.
This event is a collaboration among the four Region 15 elementary school library media specialists: Christina O’Neill (Long Meadow Elementary School), Stephanie Robinson (Middlebury Elementary School), Kristyn Mastropietro (Pomperaug Elementary School) and Christine Parker (Gainfield Elementary School); Southbury Public Library’s staff: Heather Aronson (Head of Youth Services), Chelsie Labrecque (Teen Librarian), and Sarah Rogers (Library Assistant); Nutmeg Book Award Committee; library paraprofessionals, Principals, Fifth Grade teachers and staff members, and families at each of Region 15’s elementary schools.

“I am so proud of all the students who participated in the Book Bowl and I am delighted to be a part of an event and community where our schools, teachers, librarians, and families work in partnership to celebrate reading. They make this one of the best days at our library,” Heather Aronson, Head of Youth Services, Southbury Public Library.
