Tornado Touched Down In Oxford, Southbury Area
Weather officials say a tornado did touch down locally Tuesday.
OXFORD/SOUTHBURY, CT — The National Weather Service late Wednesday confirmed that a tornado did touch down in the Soutbury and Oxford area. "The National Weather Service office in New York NY has completed a preliminary survey for the area between Southbury and Oxford in New Haven County, Connecticut. The survey is in relation to the severe thunderstorms that moved through the area on May 15, 2018."
"It has been determined that an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 mph moved along a 4.5 mile path between Southbury and Oxford. Numerous trees were uprooted along this path.
A final assessment including results of other surveys being conducted today is expected to be completed and transmitted via a Public Information Statement on Thursday.

OXFORD/SOUTHBURY, CT — A tornado touched down in Oxford and Southbury during Tuesday's powerful storm. On social media and from submitted photos and videos from Patch readers it shows a path of destruction through both towns. NBC Connecticut Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said a tornado has been confirmed.
Numerous trees are down in both towns and thousands of residents are without power. School is closed in Region 15 on Wednesday, school officials said. School is also closed in Oxford on Wednesday too.
"The Town of Southbury has experienced an extreme weather event. We ask for your patience during your recovery efforts," the First Selectman's office said in a statement. "We have multiple roads blocked with trees and tires down. Please stay home if at all possible.The First Selectman has opened Senior Center for those without power or those who cannot get home. If you have a life threatening emergency, please call 911. For non emergency issues, please call 203-264-5912."
