Several Pomperaug High School Students Honored For Excellence

SOUTHBURY/MIDDLEBURY, CT — One student from Pomperaug High School has been named has been named a 2019 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and six students have been named 2019 National Merit Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

Jacob A. Zilkha, a senior at Pomperaug Regional High School in Southbury, CT was recognized as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. He will be notified in early February if he has advanced to Finalist standing in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Commended Students from Pomperaug High School in the 2019 National Merit Program are: Jason L. Jorge, Melody J. Liu, Carson C. Moore, Stella Wang, Paul T. Zdankiewiz, and Chloe J. Zilkha. A Letter of Commendation from the school and NMSC, which conducts the program, was presented to the students.

The students were recognized at the Region 15 Board of Education meeting on Monday, October 22nd.

Approximately 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The number of Semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduation seniors.
