Several Southbury Homeowners Sign Up to Install Solar Panels

Homeowners signed up to install solar panels on their homes as part of the Solarize Southbury campaign.

Thirteen homeowners have signed contracts to install solar panels on their homes under the Solarize Southbury campaign, which ran for 20 weeks and ended in April, according to an article from the Republican American.

For such a small number, these solar panels have the power to save enough greenhouse emissions that equates to driving an average car 215,258 miles a year, the article reported.

The campaign arranged for group discounts from Encon Solar, a pre-selected installer, to reduce the cost of putting solar panels on residents’ homes, according to the article. Over 50 towns and cities in Connecticut have participated in this statewide campaign.

Southbury is still awaiting news of admission to a program that would allow a solar farm to be put on the old town landfill on Kettletown Road, the article reported. Eversource Energy and United Illuminating provides this program to help towns find qualified companies to install solar panels, and then pay companies for electricity the panels generate.

If this program were to be installed, consultant, Jordan Energy, estimated the town would save $2 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years.
