Small Screen Favorites: Fargo Episodes 1 and 2

My non-spoiler review of the first two episodes of "Fargo" season 3

Fargo is perhaps one of the most unexpected shows to be released in the past few years. With expectations low (as is the case with most TV shows based off of famous movies), it received staggeringly positive reviews, and shocked audiences even further with a second season that was even more well-received. So after a year-long hiatus, Season 3 of the anthology crime show had a lot to live up to. And I can safely say that it meets these expectations with the first two episodes, if not quite exceeding them yet.

As is the nature of the show, we are introduced to an entirely new set of characters, and every performance given is stellar. The show has made the bold decision to have main cast member Ewan McGregor play two brothers at odds with each other; the actor manages to make both characters feel unique and takes full advantage of how they are complete opposites of one another. Other standouts include Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewlis; although none of them are quite as incredible as Billy Bob Thornton or Bokeem Woodbine from previous seasons, they certainly come close and could easily get even better as the season goes on.

The script is once again sharp and witty, with the cinematography and soundtrack serving as an excellent supplement. My only criticism as of right now is that the plot feels just the slightest bit familiar; there's no telling when the writers might decide to throw in a curveball, but at the moment the concept of small, petty decisions leading to fatal consequences is somewhat played out. That being said, due to all the other positives mentioned I have complete confidence that we are in for quite a ride this season. I would collectively award these two episodes with a score of 4.5/5.
