Updated: Southbury Borders to Close

The Wall Street Journal reported that the book chain announced 200 stores would close in the wake of a bankruptcy filing. The Southbury store was one of them.

Updated:  Selectman John Turk, chairman of the town's Economic Development Commission comments on Borders.

"We have not officially nor formally heard that Borders was closing," Said Turk, in an e-mail. "We are aware that they are filing for bankruptcy, but that does not necessarily mean that the Borders in Southbury is closing.   Naturally, we are concerned when any business runs into difficulty."

In the wake of Borders declaring bankruptcy, the Southbury branch of the book chain will close, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.  Representatives of the were unavailable to comment on when their doors would shut.

The store joins Blockbusters as the second national franchise to announce a closure in Southbury in recent weeks.

The Journal reported from a list of store closures submitted to the court during a bankruptcy protection filing.

About 200 stores nation-wide will be shut, with an option to close 75 more — all told about 30 percent of the company’s stores.

According to the Journal, the stores represent a total $2 million loss for the company.
