The Town of Southbury has declared a local state of emergency. At approximately 5pm on the evening of May 15, 2018, a tornado came through the town. At the height of the storm, the town had approximately 135 road closures resulting from downed wires and trees. Currently, a majority of the roads are difficult or impassable.
Additionally, the town is close to 100 percent without power. At approximately 11:30 pm on May 15, 2018, the Region 3 Emergency Planning Team arrived in town.
At an emergency joint meeting of the Board of Selectman and Board of Finance held at noon today, they concurred with the declaration of the local state of emergency.
This is a code red message from First Selectman Jeff Manville. We continue to recover from the devastating storm that hit our town. 98% of our town remains without power and we still have many blocked roads. Our public works crews continue to work with Eversource to clear roads and restore power. We have no estimate of restoration times.
We ask for the public’s patience while we clean up. We also ask that citizens stay off the roads in order to allow for crews and officers to do their work.
The Senior Center/Parks and Rec building is open for shelter, showers, potable water, and device charging.
There is potable water available at Community House Park for those in need.
