Southbury Memorial Day Parade To Honor America’s 250th Birthday

SOUTHBURY, CT — Southbury’s annual Memorial Day Parade, ceremony and picnic will return Memorial Day with a patriotic theme tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.

Organizers said this year’s event will honor America’s “first veterans” — the soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War under George Washington.

Participants are being encouraged to dress in 1776-inspired attire for the parade, including tricorn hats, vests, long dresses and other colonial-era clothing.

The parade is scheduled for Monday, May 25, beginning at 11 a.m.

According to organizers, the parade route will begin at the Pomperaug Office Park parking lot across from CVS on Depot Hill Road, continue down Main Street South and end at Veterans Memorial Green between Town Hall and the Senior Center/Parks & Recreation offices.

A Memorial Day ceremony will immediately follow the parade, with an annual picnic afterward near the Parks & Recreation building.

Boy Scout Troop 1607 will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks during the picnic, and veterans will receive a free meal, organizers said.

Main Street South between Depot Hill Road and the Senior Center will be closed to traffic during the parade.
