Southbury Wins Award For Its Main Street South Streetscape Plan

Congratulations to the Southbury Planning and Zoning Commission.

Southbury First Selectman Edward Edelson said on his Facebook page, “Congratulations to the Southbury Planning Commission on receiving the AIA Connecticut Public Service Award for their efforts in creating and implementing the Streetscape plan that we all get to experience everyday. A big thank you to Hugh Sullivan for all of his efforts on behalf of Streetscape.”

The Award Citation reads:

The Southbury Planning Commission has been selected to receive the 2015 AIA Connecticut Public Service Award for its efforts in creating and implementing the Streetscape Plan for Main Street South.

This annual award recognizes individuals or groups who have enhanced the built environment, educated the public, or supported the architectural profession. The jury, made up of members of the AIA Connecticut Design Committee, selected the Commission because of its 25 year commitment to the creation of the Streetscape Plan as part of their Plan of Conservation and Development, building on the town’s strong tradition of preparing, adopting, amending and implementing plans to guide land use trends and to address the future needs of the community.

The recommendation of the Commission that all town owned land and rights of way for Main Street South should be used for Streetscape purposes, including roadway, landscaping, pedestrian circulation, and safe access to lots, has benefited the entire community.

The jury noted that the Streetscape plan puts architecture in the forefront for everyone to enjoy. The Commission’s efforts have prevented over-development and have successfully humanized and improved the environment. It applauded the decision of a local community that the physical environment matters, with readable physical evidence. This is a model effort for other communities.
