Wells Fargo Representatives to Explain Tax Account Issues to Southbury Officials

The representatives from the bank will explain the issues with the tax processing through the town's lockbox account.

Wells Fargo representatives will be in Southbury next Tuesday to discuss with town leaders the issues with the town’s lockbox account used to process tax payments, the Republican-American reports.

The town opened a lockbox account with the bank to process tax payments that would be sent to a post office box in New Jersey and directly transferred to a town account.

Significant problems arose with the lockbox account that led to some taxpayers being shown as delinquent in their payments, the paper reports. Other errors included incompatible file formats and destruction of envelopes that had postmarks on them.

According to the paper, tax office employees had to manually check many accounts to verify whether or not payments had been made on time.

Last week, Board of Finance members decided to continue the use of the lockbox account but with a different bank.
