Winterberry
Garden’s staff volunteers to beautify memorial park

 A memorial garden that
was planted several years ago in honor of a client of the Bristol Adult
Resource Center recently received new life when a Winterberry Garden crew
provided some much-needed tender loving care. BARC provides services and
programs for individuals with disabilities, helping them to maximize
independence and achieve inclusion in the community.

Larry’s Park is an integral part of one of
the agency’s home locations. “It is an amazing setting for our clients to take
a peaceful stroll, get some exercise on a bike, play an outdoor game, or relax
and enjoy the outdoors,” said Ivonne Daigle, BARC director of day services.

Winterberry Landscape and Garden Center,
located at 2070 West St. in Southington, had originally designed and installed
Larry’s Park. During the last few seasons the park had become overgrown and
unusable.

“We had been discussing how we could
approach the huge undertaking of weeding all the flower beds, and trimming the
shrubs and trees. We were anticipating it taking weeks and requiring lots of
manpower,” Daigle said.

Then the organization received a call from Scott
Leavitt, co-owner of Winterberry Garden, offering to donate the services to
clean up Larry’s Park. “We were thrilled,” she said.

"When we realized that clients at
BARC were no longer able to use Larry's Park for outdoor activities because of
how overgrown it had become, we knew we needed to get involved and bring the
beauty and functionality back to this much-needed space,” Leavitt said.

It took eight Winterberry Garden
professionals to clean the grounds and flower beds, trim shrubs and trees, and
plant dozens of beautiful geraniums, which they donated to the project. “At Winterberry, one
of our major goals is to support the local community where we live and work.
Being able to donate our time and service to this project truly makes us
happy," Leavitt said.

“We love our refreshed, revived park and
our clients are definitely taking every opportunity to enjoy some time
outside,” Daigle said.
