SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington Fire Department crews contained a residential fire and saved a dog on Heritage Drive early Thursday morning that injured one person and prompted a multi-department response.

The fire was reported at about 1:10 a.m. at 27 Heritage Drive as a camper fire near a home, according to SFD Chief Scott Lee.

The American Red Cross said Thursday it is helping one family – three adults and one child — after the blaze. The Red Cross assisted to meet the family's immediate needs.

A deputy chief arriving first found the camper “well-involved,” with flames extending to the house, he said.

A working fire was declared, and the incident was later upgraded to a second alarm by the shift commander.

Firefighters deployed hose lines to extinguish the camper fire before launching an interior attack on the residence.

Crews identified fire extension on one side of the structure and into the attic during operations.

All occupants had evacuated before crews arrived.

Members of Squad 5 rescued a dog from the home, and one occupant sustained burns and was treated at the scene by AMR personnel before being transported to a hospital, the SFD said.

The fire was brought under control without any reported firefighter injuries.

Mutual aid departments from Bristol, Meriden, New Britain, Plainville, and Cheshire assisted at the scene, while Middletown, Kensington, and Wolcott provided station coverage during the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Southington Fire Marshal’s Office in coordination with the Southington Police Department.
