SOUTHINGTON, CT — Firefighters in Southington responded to a brush fire Saturday afternoon onRagged Mountain, deploying specialized equipment to manage the terrain and contain the flames.

The Southington Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2033 reported at 1:15 p.m. that “B shift members [were] operating at a brush fire on Ragged Mountain.”

Crews set up a high-angle rope system “for firefighter safety and to get water down to the bottom of the cliff for extinguishment,” according to the statement.

Ragged Mountain, a 761-foot traprock ridge, is known for its steep cliffs and rugged terrain, which can complicate firefighting efforts.

The area includes sections of the Metacomet Trail and is a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers.

Brush fires are a recurring concern across Connecticut in the spring months, typically from mid-March through May.

Dry, dead vegetation combined with warmer temperatures, wind, and limited tree canopy can allow fires to ignite and spread quickly.

No additional details about containment, injuries, or damage were immediately available.
