Unruly Behavior Reported At Southington Transfer Station

SOUTHINGTON, CT — Citing rude behavior from users of the Southington Transfer Station, the town councilor who heads the public works committee has asked local leaders for help.

During councilperson communications on April 13, Michael Del Santo, who chairs the council public works committee, reported heavy usage at the town’s transfer station, located at 617 Old Turnpike Road, Plantsville, over the weekend of April 11, with more than 1,100 vehicles recorded and 287 passes issued.

According to Del Santo, one issue was people coming to the facility to dispose of waste without a pass.

Del Santo emphasized that April 11 and April 18 were the only Saturdays residents could obtain transfer station passes at the highway department.

He said passes are also available weekdays at the tax revenue collection office until 4:30 p.m., and must be affixed to vehicle windows.

“No one will be allowed in the transfer station without a pass,” he said.

Of particular concern, however, was the behavior of folks looking to utilize the town transfer station.

Del Santo noted instances of “disrespectful and rude” behavior from some visitors and said information about the process has been shared on social media and the town website.

DelSanto formally requested support from Southington Town Manager Alex Ricciardone, including the temporary assignment of an additional town staff member and a police officer to manage operations and safety in the coming weeks.
