NY Man Tries To Rob Southington Credit Union With Fake ID: Police

The 44-year-old suspect, police said, is accused of identity theft and forging a check in an effort to withdraw thousands of dollars.

SOUTHINGTON, CT — A New York man is was accused Monday after police said he attempted to cash a forged check while posing as another person at a Southington credit union.

According to the Southington Police Department, officers were dispatched to American Eagle Credit Union at about 3:52 p.m. on April 27 after bank staff reported suspicious activity involving an individual trying to impersonate a customer.

Upon arrival, an officer identified the suspect inside the bank.

When approached, the man attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended after what police described as a brief struggle.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators determined the suspect had a fraudulent identification card displaying his photograph but another person’s personal information.

Police said he was also in possession of a credit card in that person’s name and a forged check for $7,500.

Bank employees had detected the irregularities and alerted authorities before any financial loss occurred.

The suspect was identified as Julian James, 44, of Bronx, N.Y.

James faces multiple charges, including interfering with an officer, second-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, attempted first-degree identity theft, third-degree identity theft, attempted second-degree larceny, and illegal possession of a payment card.

He was held on a $25,000 cash/surety bond and appeared Tuesday in New Britain Superior Court.

According to online court records on Thursday morning, James is still being held , and his next court appearance is July 14.

Police credited the bank’s quick response with preventing a financial loss.

The case remains under investigation.
