SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington school officials are proposing stricter eligibility requirements for early dismissal for seniors at Southington High School beginning with the Class of 2027.
During a May 7 Southington Board of Education meeting, SHS Principal Richard Aroian, world languages teacher Tina Riccio and math teacher Marisa Kudla presented concerns and proposed changes involving the school’s senior dismissal program.
The proposal would limit automatic eligibility for early dismissal to seniors who have earned at least 20 credits by the end of junior year and maintain a grade-point average of 3.65 or higher.
According to the presentation, 171 students in the current junior class — about 36% of the Class of 2027 — would qualify under the proposed standards.
School officials said the revised criteria are intended to encourage students to make more intentional academic decisions tied to career goals and postsecondary plans while also increasing participation in electives, college-credit opportunities and other in-school learning experiences.
The presentation also cited concerns involving class sizes, support for struggling students, and maintaining balanced daily schedules.
Under the proposal, exceptions to the GPA and credit requirements would still be available for students participating in approved internship or mentorship programs, as well as through an appeal process.
Aroian told board members the information has already been shared with parents.
Board members expressed agreement that changes to the early dismissal approval process are needed, according to meeting minutes.
The revised eligibility standards would apply only to seniors.
