SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington Police Department has graduated the inaugural class of its first-ever Citizens Police Academy, marking a milestone in the department's efforts to strengthen relationships with the community.
The 10-week program, which concluded last week, gave community volunteers an inside look at the day-to-day operations of the police department and the various specialized units that support public safety.
Participants learned about patrol operations, criminal investigations, and specialized teams, including the department's K-9 Unit, Drone Unit, and Hostage Negotiation Team.
The academy also included an overview of the department's dispatch center and presentations from partner agencies, including New Britain Superior Court, the Victim Advocate's Office, and the Connecticut Department of Children and Families (DCF).
According to the department, the Citizens Police Academy was designed to build stronger partnerships between residents and law enforcement by encouraging open dialogue and increasing public understanding of modern policing.
"We hope it leaves a lasting impression on everyone involved," the department said in a social media announcement recognizing the graduates.
Police thanked the participants for volunteering their time throughout the program and acknowledged SPD Officer Judemayer Medena for coordinating the department's inaugural Citizens Police Academy.
The department said the program reflects its commitment to community engagement and fostering stronger connections between officers and the residents they serve.
