SOUTHINGTON, CT — United Way of Southington is seeking volunteers to help collect school supply donations during its annual Back-to-School Supply Drive on Saturday, July 25, at the Southington Walmart, 235 Queen St.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with volunteers serving in two-hour shifts.
Organizers are looking for four volunteers per shift to greet shoppers, hand out lists of requested school supplies and collect donated items as customers leave the store.
Seating will be available throughout each shift.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome, and individuals, families, friends and coworkers are encouraged to participate.
All donated supplies will benefit Southington Community Services' annual Back-to-School "Shop," where local families can choose the specific school supplies their children's teachers have requested.
The annual Back-to-School "Shop" is a program where qualified local families can pick up new backpacks, specific teacher-requested supplies, and a $20 voucher for their children (grades K-12).
Families need to apply directly through Southington Community Services to participate.
Requested donations include backpacks, notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue sticks, scissors, and other classroom essentials.
Those interested in volunteering can register for a shift through United Way of Southington's online sign-up page or contact the organization for additional information.
United Way of Southington said the annual drive helps ensure local students begin the school year with the supplies they need for the classroom.
