SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington Community Services Food Pantry is asking residents for help replenishing its supply of canned beans after stocks ran low.
"Our shelves are very low on canned beans," the organization said in a community alert calling the need urgent.
The pantry is encouraging residents who are able to help by donating cans, contributing money or spreading the word about the shortage.
Canned beans are particularly useful to food pantries because they provide an affordable, shelf-stable source of plant-based protein and fiber while requiring no refrigeration or lengthy cooking.
Their long shelf life also makes them practical for both food pantries and the households they serve.
Beans provide protein, fiber, and complex carbohydrates, along with nutrients including iron and potassium.
For families facing food insecurity, canned varieties can offer a convenient alternative to fresh meat and other protein sources that may be more expensive or require refrigeration.
They are also relatively easy to prepare because canned beans are already cooked.
They can be eaten after heating or incorporated into soups, stews, salads, rice dishes, and casseroles, making them a versatile pantry staple.
The organization did not specify how many cans are needed or how long the current shortage is expected to last.
"Every can makes a difference," the alert said. "Thank you, Southington!"
Canned bean donations can be dropped off at Southington Community Services, 91 Norton St. Donations are accepted Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
