SOUTHINGTON, CT — The Southington Police Department will host a personal safety program for women this fall, with participation limited to 50 people.
As a result, registration is open now, and slots are filling up fast, police said.
"Empowered, Not Afraid: Strategies for Everyday Personal Safety" is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Southington Police Department, 69 Lazy Lane.
Police said the event has already generated significant interest and advance registration is required.
The one-hour program is designed to give women practical strategies for approaching personal safety with "informed, calm confidence," according to the department.
The session will use crime data to examine patterns of victimization, including when, where, and how crimes against women most commonly occur.
It will also address what police described as common misconceptions that can create unnecessary anxiety.
Participants will learn situational awareness techniques, including how to recognize unusual changes in their surroundings and potential indicators preceding an attack.
The program will also focus on incorporating simple safety habits into everyday life.
The course will be taught by Michael Lukanik, a 30-year law enforcement veteran and certified Connecticut police instructor.
Police said the strategies presented will be based on real-world law enforcement practices and applicable legal considerations.
The program is designed for women of all ages and backgrounds.
Registration is limited to 50 participants.
