SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington residents, first responders and town officials gathered Friday morning to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The town's 9/11 Memorial Patriotic Service was held at 8:46 a.m. at the memorial at the corner of Summer and Main streets in Plantsville.
The time coincided with when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center's North Tower 25 years ago.
The service honored those who died in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania and reflected on the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
Southington Town Manager Alex Ricciardone described Friday's ceremony as "an incredibly powerful and moving 9/11 Memorial Patriotic Service" and thanked residents for attending.
"It was beautiful to see our community come together in such a big way," Ricciardone said.
Speakers included current and former Southington Town Council chairpersons, representatives of the Southington fire and police departments, and state lawmakers, according to Ricciardone.
He said speakers offered reflections centered on resilience and unity and also thanked the town's first responders for their continuing service.
"Thank you to our first responders who continue to protect us every day, and to this amazing community for ensuring we never forget," Ricciardone said.
The annual ceremony is held at Southington's 9/11 Memorial in Plantsville and is open to community residents, civic organizations, first responders, and local officials.
