SOUTHINGTON, CT — Southington firefighters have received 35 new sets of protective turnout gear as part of the department's planned replacement of equipment used during structure fires.

The Southington Fire Department announced earlier this month that it had recently taken delivery of the new equipment, citing firefighter safety and emergency preparedness as reasons for the investment.

Structural firefighting turnout gear has a maximum service life of 10 years, according to the department, making regular replacement necessary to keep protective equipment current and reliable.

"The Southington Fire Department recently took delivery of 35 new sets of structural firefighting turnout gear as part of our ongoing commitment to firefighter safety and operational readiness," the department said.

Turnout gear is the protective clothing firefighters wear while responding to structure fires and other emergencies.

The department thanked the Southington Board of Fire Commissioners, Southington Town Manager's Office, and municipal leaders for supporting the purchase.

"Investments like these ensure our members have the equipment they need to safely and effectively serve our community," the department said.

The department did not specify the total cost of the 35 sets in its announcement.
